Located in the area between the Aquarium and the Maritime Station, the Galata museum is housed in the oldest building of the old marina, the Darsena, once the Arsenal of the Republic of Genoa. Since 1590, the galleys of the Genoese fleet were built and armed here.
Today, in keeping with the past, the Galata is home to the Museum of the Sea, with an architectural reconstruction of great value designed by Guillermo Vázquez Consuegra.

Thanks to an exhibition on four floors, and an Open Air Museum with the highlight attraction the S518 Nazario Sauro Submarinethe first floating museum in Italy –, the Galata is currently the largest maritime museum in the Mediterranean. The history of the vital relationship between man and the sea is the exhibition’s recurring theme, on an area of 130,000 square feet with innovative, interactive multimedia stations, 4,300 original items, and constantly updated themes and exhibitions.   Read more...

Accessibility for Disabled Motors: a three-wheel electric scooter is available.

Accessibility for blind people: a multimedia guide and a tactile map are available to present to the reader - visual or tactile - the main tourist information points visible from the Mirador panoramic terrace.
Galata's tactile guide is also available.

Accessibility for hearing-impaired: Galata is the first museum in Italy to adopt amplification devices to improve listening along the way and inside the submerged Nazario Sauro for hearing-aiders and all visitors with hearing problems.

Through the guided discovery of places and paths of artistic worth and of high emotional impact, we aim to help patients with this heart disease to achieve an adequate level of training and to improve their adherence to the prescribed daily physical exercise program.

Accessibility projects are being developed for people with mental disabilities.
The submarine S-518 Nazario Sauro, the water-boat-museum, is not accessible to disabled people in the wheelchair.
