Born in Europe during the Renaissance, through the centuries laces have been the most expensive and refined accessories for clothing, home and liturgical furnishings. The important series of laces of the Textile Collections includes a vast repertoire of artefacts, exclusively produced by women. The first period is testified by precious Genoese rosettes in bobbin lace, and by Venetian needle laces, characterised by the famous points in the air. As an expression of the subsequent bloom of laces in the Baroque and Rococo era, the collection also features Venetian point plat and raised borders, bobbin laces from both Milan and the Flanders, and the very wide range of 18th-century French and Flemish laces (Alençon, Valenciennes, Malines). Finally, the 19th century is well represented by high-quality Brussels laces and Ligurian manufactures, predominantly produced in the Levante Riviera (Rapallo, Santa Margherita) since the 19th century, including both bobbin laces and the famous macramé knots.
