Christopher Columbus visited the island in his youth, where he developed his plan to find an alternative ‘route to the Indies’ to the one that had been blocked by the Turkish advance. The painting depicts the Greek island, a Genoese colony since 1346, famous for the production of mastic, a resin extracted from the mastic tree.
