The bust was identified by Santo Varni in 1866 with the one commissioned in 1536 by the City Fathers to Gian Giacomo or Guglielmo Della Porta for a fountain to be erected in front of the Church of Sant'Ambrogio. The fountain was later moved to Piazza San Domenico in 1628 and from there to Piazza Marsala during the 19th century. In the 19th century, the bust of Janus, detached from the structure of which it was originally part, was mounted on the dome of the aedicule in Piazza Sarzano. In 2001, it was transferred to the Museum of St Augustine. Statue of Janus Bifrons with double bearded face.
