Wind instrument made from a spiral-shaped animal horn. It is used during certain Jewish religious services such as Yom Kippur, but also for sounding the alarm, launching troops on the assault, terrorising the enemy and summoning assemblies. Mentioned in the Bible and Talmud for its particularly intense sound and piercing timbre.
