The drawing is the last of three projects kept at the Gabinetto Disegni e Stampe di Palazzo Rosso, made by Reni at the end of 1613 for the altarpiece of the church of Santa Maria della Pietà. The latter, only completed in 1616 with some variations to the present drawing, was commissioned to him on the occasion of a complex programme of reorganisation of Bologna's welfare structures.
