In the image, a small inrō case is tied and partially concealed by the sumptuous layers of the kimono fabric and the large rain umbrella (janome-gasa) clasped to the chest, strategically positioned along the belt to balance the character’s travel accessories. Portrait of a Kabuki actor in the role of otokodate, or ‘street knight’, Hanakawado Sukeroku, who is in fact one of the famous Soga Brothers in disguise (Soga Gorō). The young man is wearing the character’s typical black kimono featuring the Gyōyō Botan (杏葉牡丹) mon (emblem) – a peony flower on apricot leaves – and carries some of the character’s attributes: the straight bamboo flute (shakuhachi), visible behind his back; a large umbrella held closed in his hand at the front; and the sword sheathed in his sash (obi), the hilt (tsuka) of which protrudes.
