Stele of Apollonia
ambito greco
Unità di misura: cm; Altezza: 37; Larghezza: 34; Profondità: 7
marmo
A quadrangular fineraria stele with a carved pediment crowned in low relief on which is engraved a dedicatory inscription to the demos, typical of Smyrna stelae. Below the pediment is the main inscription. In the centre of the work, a figurative scene is carved in bas-relief with a hammer: on the left, a female figure seated on a throne, wearing a chiton tied under the breast and covered on the head by a matel, which she removes from her face with her left hand, which can be traced back to the type of so-called pudicitia. In the centre is a cylindrical altar, decorated at the top and bottom with a string-cord frame. On the right is a smaller figure, an attendant, wearing a chiton tied under the breast and an apoptigma reaching above the knee. The left arm descends along the body, and the right arm, abraded, must have been stretched forward.
