The Canons are secular priests who lived in community taking care of the Cathedral of San Lorenzo. Generally they were cadets of Genoese noble families such as the Fieschi, Doria, Spinola, and Lercari: becoming canoni-cal was the first step to access the ecclesiastical career. Inside the Cloister they shared common areas but enjoyed private rooms, in part on the ground floor and first floor. Finally, a pier allowed access to the Cathedral for evening and night prayers
