At the sketch stage, it is dominated by powerful colours: blacks, yellows and reds. The theme of carnival is one of the most recurrent in Venetian painting, and Giacomo Favretto tackles it with great spontaneity, without getting lost in secondary narrative episodes. The painting depicts the carnival celebrations in Venice, with the Rialto Bridge in the background.
