During the 1930s, Francesca Messina adhered to the return to order in Italian art: the work celebrates the physical prowess of Italian athletes and references the forms of classical Greek and Roman sculpture, which were very popular in Italy during the Fascist era. The statuette depicts a boxer standing with his hands forward as if resting on the ropes of a ring. The athlete is naked with his head slightly turned to his left. His stern face is that of a young, determined man. His hair is short but gathered in strands on top of his head.
