Tammar Luxoro was part of the ‘Grey School’ or ‘School of the Greys’, a Ligurian painting school that renewed the northern Italian approach to landscape painting in the second half of the 19th century. Their art was inspired by the anti-academic and naturalistic artistic vision then in vogue in France, which indirectly referred to the political situation caused by the uprisings of 1848. The school was founded at a time when northern Italy was still influenced by a conservative and conventional attitude in the arts. The painting depicts a rural landscape with a locomotive.
