Turkish Living Room

Furnished by the Captain like many other oriental lounges in Europe, the Salotto Turco (Turkish Living Room) embodies the fascination for the exotic at the end of the 19th century.

It is a romantic evocation of a nomadic Middle-Eastern world, that at the time fascinated the Western world, through objects and furnishings from China, India, Japan, Turkey, Persia…

The Turkish Living Room, in the castle’s typical balance between neo-Gothic and exotic, becomes the space for the Captain to indulge in the reproduction of the western notion of a far and unknown world, among hookah pipe for opium, sofas, scary armours, flaming scimitars, Japanese vases and African busts. A composition that suggests the appropriation of the otherness, to be enjoyed from afar, without aiming at their verisimilitude.
