After a brief foray on the river Fly, during which he was in the retinue of the missionary MacFarlane, Luigi Maria d'Albertis obtained a steamboat from the Australian government. He organised two further expeditions on the vessel, dubbed the "Neva", both of which followed the river deep into the inland of New Guinea.
