The numismatic collection: coins and medals

The numismatic collections of the Municipality of Genoa have been built up with substantial bequests dating from the 19th century when they were kept in the University Library.
Since 1893, the Municipality kept the collections in the depository and expanded them with further acquisitions during the 20th century.
The most significant items of the collection (including ancient coins, Genoese and Ligurian coins, medals) are presented on displays designed by Franco Albini – renovated for the occasion – and in modern showcases, allowing to simultaneously view both sides of the coins and magnify them.
Paintings, busts, marbles and other items emphasise the relation of the collections with the history of Genoa.
