The first mint in Genoa (1139-1339)

“ Ovunque van e stan/ un’atra Zenoa ge fan” (Anonymous' 300)

“Wherever they go or stay/ another Genoa they make”

Genoa therefore began to coins in 1139, by concession of the German emperor Corrado, in copper, silver (denari “minuti” & denari “grossi”) and finally the gold “Genovino”, which contended with the Florentine florin and the coin of Lucca for primacy as the Italian standard gold coin (see the “Genovino” and the “grosso” in display case B).
