Pharmaceutical vessels

The Strada Nuova Museums ceramics collections also incorporate articles from the pharmacies of two large Genoa hospitals founded during the 15th century: the Ospedale Maggiore, known as di Pammatone, and the Ospedale degli Incurabili, both closed at the end of the 19th century. The huge sets of majolica vessels once used in the two apothecaries, in large part displayed in the Sale delle Antiche Farmacie in Palazzo Doria Tursi, were manufactured in Genoa, Savona and Albisola, over a period of time between the 15th and 18th century. It is an exceptionally important collection in terms of both the high artistic value of the majolica and its great scientific importance with regard to the history of pharmacopoeia and medicine.
