The subject was recognized in the context of “palms 9 and 6 with Bacchus Satyrs, a Tiger, and fruits, an element of the Earth,” mentioned in the 1666 inventory of physician Francesco Maria Ruffo, a member of the Calabrian branch of the princes of Scilla. It was probably thanks to the numerous interests and contacts maintained by the Ruffo family with Genoese merchant-bankers, mainly the Cicala family, that a branch of the family settled in Genoa, although this remained unknown to scholars for a long time. Francesco Maria's collection included, among others, 38 paintings by Jan Roos, showing a real preference for still lifes and genre subjects. (Priarone 2009, pp. 703-717) The painting depicts the god Bacchus emerging from a wine vat laden with bunches of grapes, surrounded by his typical animal entourage and exuberant nature.
